EMMANUEL JAL

Africa's greatest rapper according to USA Today, Emmanuel Jal was born in Sudan, a war-torn country. For more than six years, he was sent to fight in the bloody civil war in Sudan. For five years, he was a child warrior thrown into the battle with a Kalashnikov taller than he was. By the age of 13, he was already a veteran of two civil wars and had seen hundreds of child soldiers decimated by horrific atrocities.

To relieve the pain of this long period of his life, Emmanuel began to sing. In 2005, he released his first album, Gua ("Peace" in his native language of the Nuer tribe in Sudan). Warchild, his latest album, was mixed and produced by Grammy-winner Neal Pogue and writer-producer Roachie based in the UK. The latter co-wrote most of the 13 songs with Jal, drawing inspiration from the tragic past of the artist. His music was used in the soundtrack of three episodes of Emergency Services, and more recently, in the movie Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio. More info: www.emmanueljal.org

UNT1

Founded nearly a decade ago, the Iraqi pop band UTN1 (Unknown To No One) hopes to inspire young people to keep hope despite the crises in the Middle East.

The musicians fled the Iraqi dictator before finding refuge in Britain to refine their musical knowledge. In summer 2006, when they filmed their video in Lebanon, they found themselves caught up in the 33-Day War between Israel and Hezbollah.

"We have seen worse in Iraq", points out one of the musicians who regrets the chronic political and religious tensions in Lebanon. "I call on the Lebanese people to learn from what happened in Iraq and not to make the same mistakes. Please, be careful!" The group, which includes Muslims and Christians, is an example of the harmony that must prevail in Iraq, ravaged by sectarian violence after the fall of Saddam. UTN1 also wants to send a message of peace to the Arab world and the West. More info: www.unt1.com

THERESA RHODES

Born in England, Theresa Rhodes spent her childhood in India and Zimbabwe. Her first composition, Save Tomorrow -- a duet with Jermaine Jackson-- was a heartfelt cry against the atrocities committed in the former Yugoslavia. Encouraged by her tour with with Jermaine Jackson, Theresa delivered her first solo album, Quiet Storm. This was followed with four excellent CDs (including Stealing the Show) and multiple concerts with the pop/rock group, One For the Road, the group led by her friend, the brilliant guitarist Kiet Nguyen.

For her latest solo album, If You Had Only..., Theresa Rhodes is surrounded by a combo of musicians from the jazz and world music scenes, including Youssou N'Dour. With them, she offers us a wonderful journey where blues, jazz, and the worlds of folk and rock mingle... Today, revolted by the crimes of unimaginable cruelty inflicted by those in power --instead of supporters of democratic change-- Theresa has launched a new cry of distress for orphans in Zimbabwe. DON'T MISS THE SHOWING OF WARCHILD

WARCHILD The film chronicles the tumultuous life and finally brought hope of Emmanuel Jal who brings a message of peace for this war-torn country and for his beloved Africa. Its history, in many respects, is the image of his homeland, where the tragedy and terror alongside hope and reconstruction. His itinerary, in many ways is just beginning. His dream of Gua (peace) in Sudan and prosperity in Africa is threatened by corrupt leaders, warlords and genocidal indifference of the West. Let us hope that peace Emmanuel (its quest for a better world through music and activism) will prove far more constructive than the previous war of Emmanuel. www.warchildmovie.com
